PEATWISE

Wise use of drained peatlands in a bio-based economy: Development of improved assessment practices and sustainable techniques for mitigation of greenhouse gases (PEATWISE)

Funding period: 2017-2020 (FACCE ERA-GAS)

Principal investigator: Associate professor Marja Maljanen

The main aim of the project is to advance wise management of drained peatlands to minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while still maintaining biomass production. There are partners from  Norwegian Bioeconomy Research Institute, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Aarhus University, Radboud University Nijmegen, University of Eastern Finland, University of Oulu, University of Waikato, and Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research in this network.

The main role of UEF is to carry out laboratory incubation/field experiments with several peat soils with known GHG emissions and to investigate possibilities to reduce emissions by selecting different liming (dolomite-other minerals-wood ash) products.
