Vahid Farrahi’s study attracts media interest

BioMEP Early Stage Researcher’s study about daily activity behavior attracts extensive media interest

BioMEP Early Stage Researcher Vahid Farrahi’s article “Compositional associations of sleep and activities within the 24-hour cycle with cardiometabolic health markers in adults”, published in August, has received extensive media visibility. The novel findings of the study have been featured in more than 30 international, national, and local news outlets, including YLE (Finland’s national broadcasting channel) radio and website, and Iltalehti.

The widely acknowledged study showed that even a 10-minute reduction in daily time spent in sitting or lying contributes to better heart health in adults. This could be achieved by performing more high-intensity activities, or, based on these novel findings, also with accommodating more light activities in a 24-hour day. Convenient walking, housework, shopping, cooking, easy gardening, and standing around are all examples of activities usually categorized as light intensity. The sample included about 3500 people from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 study.

The huge for media attention was exciting for Farrahi, who describes the experience with journalists and reporters instructive and interesting . “It is an amazing feeling to go beyond the scientific community and talk to the general population too. That is what matters eventually – a healthier society”
Farrahi adds that, getting media attention is easier that what it looks like initially. He says that he has received extensive support from people within and outside his research team including his colleagues and supervisors, and university communication specialists. They have helped him to simplify the findings and highlight the main study findings for the general population. “My funders, people of the BioMEP doctoral programme, participants of the birth cohort, and the University of Oulu have all worked towards an amazing mutual goal; to improve the welfare of our society. I have perhaps just completed the last piece of puzzle, telling people in the society how they can have a better health” Farrahi says, very pleased with the situation.
