Each of these topics is often developed throughout several sequential teaching hours, depending on the time table of each year and the course needs. The topics are not presented in chronological order, as this is adapted to each course timetable and number of students. The assignments are intended to help developing and exercising the theory, related to R and GIS tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-5bea3290-0935-4708-a6ee-1f1d61d9a1db\">The lectures are organised in modules (topics), and exercises for a total of 3.5 ECTS. In Finland, 1 ECTS equals 27h of course workload; this course is designed to fulfill 94.5h, distributed in: ca. 28h of direct interaction and lectures, ca. 14h in exercises and the rest in preparing the lectures, assignments and tasks. See the calendar and assignments for further information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fcfcfc\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p id=\"block-323aadce-9270-4721-b798-02f45a4dd3a9\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.uef.fi\/biopro\/courses\/research-methodologies-in-forest-sciences\/course-structure\/background-statistics\/\">Topic 1.<\/a>&nbsp;Background concepts<\/strong><br>statistical thinking &#8211; probability &#8211; randomness &#8211; distributions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.uef.fi\/biopro\/courses\/research-methodologies-in-forest-sciences\/course-structure\/statistical-tools\/\">Topic 2.<\/a>&nbsp;Main tools<\/strong><br>expectation &#8211; hypothesis tests &#8211; p-values &#8211; Inference<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.uef.fi\/biopro\/courses\/research-methodologies-in-forest-sciences\/course-structure\/models\/\">Topic 3.<\/a>&nbsp;Models<\/strong><br>regression &#8211; linear models &#8211; parameter estimation &#8211; model assessment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.uef.fi\/biopro\/courses\/research-methodologies-in-forest-sciences\/course-structure\/advance-models\/\">Topic 4.\u00a0<\/a>Advanced methods<br><\/strong>Non-linear models &#8211; geostatistics &#8211; hierarchical models<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Practical methods:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentuef.sharepoint.com\/sites\/Biopro\/SitePages\/Research.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">R-Materials<\/a><br><\/strong>R environment &#8211; importing data &#8211; analysis and models &#8211; presentation of results<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-323aadce-9270-4721-b798-02f45a4dd3a9\"><strong>Practical methods:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentuef.sharepoint.com\/sites\/Biopro\/SitePages\/Research.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GIS-Materials<\/a><br><\/strong>GIS environment &#8211; maps &#8211; geostatistics &#8211; presentation of results<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-289cd641-eda9-4682-985c-9a6630975297\">Requirements and evaluation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-28b0787d-4045-442b-b801-2333b563bb81\">Grading is from 0 to 5, with 1 being the minimum to pass the course, as standard in the UEF courses. 70% of the grade will be based on the final exam, and 30% of the grade will ne based on the assignments. The assignments are dseign to support learning for the final exam.
