Course descriptions of the first academic year can be found in <a href=\"https:\/\/opas.peppi.uef.fi\/en\/programme\/142153?period=2026-2027\" id=\"https:\/\/opas.peppi.uef.fi\/en\/programme\/142153?period=2026-2027\">Peppi Study Guide 2026\u20132028<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MSc European Forestry studies are divided into the following three Modules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Academic Year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Study Module 1 <\/strong>(13 ECTS) takes place in Joensuu and improves your professional knowledge by offering the following courses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>LM00CO25 Trends in European Forestry, 5 ECTS (August 2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LM00CO20 Academic Skills in Forest Sciences, 1.5 ECTS (Autumn 2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LM00CO21 Research Methodology in Forest Sciences, 3.5 ECTS&nbsp; (Autumn 2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LM00CO28 Global Virtual Seminar, 3 ECTS (All year)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Elective courses (min. 30 ECTS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a package of courses offered by the University of Eastern Finland jointly selected by the Consortium to provide you with necessary background to follow any of the available study tracks during the second academic year.&nbsp; You are free to choose among the elective courses, although there are some recommended courses associated with each Thematic Area, TA (see the Study Guide). The Thematic Areas are the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TA1 &#8211; Forest information technology and decision<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TA2 &#8211; Ecosystem services and bioeconomy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TA3 &#8211; Disturbance ecology and risk analysis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TA4 &#8211; Silviculture and forest engineering<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TA5 &#8211; Policy, society, and governance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main learning outcomes of the different thematic areas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TA1 (Forest information technology and decision support):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gain knowledge of the methodologies used to establish forest resource information services (e.g., AI analytics) and be able to understand and compare the various tools and models used to support forest resource management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrate advanced knowledge of forest planning practices and operations, as well as gain expertise in forest governance and decision support systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>TA2 (Ecosystem services and bioeconomy):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Understand how to manage forests for the provision of different ecosystem services and model the ecological and social processes that underpin for ecosystem services in different contexts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand carbon dynamics and possibilities for the management of the carbon cycle in forest ecosystems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>TA 3 (Disturbance ecology and risk analysis):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify and describe the main disturbance regimes to which forests are exposed and the main characteristics of these disturbances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand the basic techniques and tools for risk management and assessment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Know the major concepts and approaches for spatial and ecological modelling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>TA 4 (Silviculture and forest engineering):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gain knowledge of the alternative silvicultural practices, forest operation measures and management concepts in different parts of Europe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comprehend the biological processes that drive forest ecosystem dynamics and forest management practices, and the impact of a changing climate and other environmental factors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>TA 5 (Policy, society and governance):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Understand the importance of forest governance strategies to achieve the objectives of the forest sector.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analyse and interpret forest policy documents and the stakeholders involved in policy formulation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Propose recommendations to enhance the sustainability of forest management practices within the existing policy framework.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The list of available courses may vary each year depending on the student feedback and teaching arrangements. EFFC is designed and implemented by the Consortium after Module 1 in May. The EFFC takes you across Europe. The main objective is to provide you with in-depth knowledge on socially, culturally and economically sustainable forestry in different parts of Europe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applied Period in Forest Institutions, 9 ECTS. During the Applied period in Forest Institution (a two-month internship), you have the opportunity to get familiar with working life and project management. Our Consortium universities and associated partners are offering these placements. A list of available placements each year will be provided during the autumn semester of the first academic year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Second Academic Year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Study Module 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your second academic year <strong>is conducted in one of the MSc EF Consortium universities in Austria, France, Germany, Romania, Spain or the Netherlands (not in Finland)<\/strong> and it is based on <strong>Study Module 3<\/strong> where each Consortium university offers a package core courses they are able to offer for each of the Thematic Area based on their expertise and course catalogues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Master\u2019s Thesis and Online Thesis Seminar are also included in Study Module 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Advanced Courses, 24*\u201330 ECTS.&nbsp;<\/strong> The selected advanced courses support the European Forestry curriculum by offering you the very speciality of your chosen second year host university.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Master\u2019s Thesis and online thesis seminar, 30\u201336* ECTS. <\/strong>The master\u2019s thesis. Composing a master\u2019s thesis, 30 ECTS, is one of the most important components of the MSc European Forestry curriculum. It trains you to carry out research independently in the field of forest sciences. The goal is to produce&nbsp;a piece of research work that could be published in an international scientific journal. The thesis must be prepared according to the guidelines given by the host university. All the students also present their theses in an online seminar. This online seminar is compulsory for everyone and you can flexibly choose the timing for recording and uploading your video presentation. *MSc Thesis in the Netherlands carries 36 ECTS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Graduation Ceremony and working life event: <\/strong>You have a possibility to participate in the graduation ceremony and working life event online\/onsite. Additional \u201cTrack+\u201d includes studies provided by the <em>Associated Partner Universities<\/em> in Canada, China or Brazil. EFFC is designed and implemented by the Consortium after Module 1 in May. The EFFC takes you across Europe through Spain, France, Germany, Austria and Romania. The main objective is to provide you with in-depth knowledge on socially, culturally and economically sustainable forestry in different parts of Europe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3513158 Applied Period in Forest Institutions, 10 ECTS. During the Applied period in Forest Institution (a two-month internship), you have the opportunity to get familiar with working life and project management. Our Consortium universities and associated partner universities and associated industrial and scientific partners are offering these placements. Additional \u201cTrack+\u201d includes studies provided by the <em>Associated Partner Universities<\/em> in Canada, China or Brazil. Composing a master&#8217;s thesis, 30 ECTS, is one of the most important components of the MSc European Forestry curriculum. It trains you to carry out research independently in the field of forest sciences. The goal is to produce&nbsp;a piece of research work that could be published in an international scientific journal. The thesis must be prepared according to the guidelines given by the host university. For further information on master&#8217;s thesis, please click the Thesis link on the left. All the students also present their theses in an online seminar. This online seminar is compulsory for everyone and you can flexibly choose the timing for recording and uploading your video presentation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>European Forestry Forum \u2013 Job Fairs and Graduation Ceremony. <\/strong>You have a possibility to participate at the European Forestry Forum where the graduation ceremony takes place. All the graduated participants present their thesis to a wide audience of fellow students, researchers and employers.
