The project is implemented by the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences and the Department of Geographical and Historical Studies at the University of Eastern Finland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project’s goal is to develop ecologically sustainable cultivation of sphagnum moss, which minimizes climate and water emissions, aiming towards carbon and nutrient sequestration. The activities promote climate and water objectives as well as the protection and restoration of biodiversity in peatland complexes where the activities are located, focusing on new production based on sphagnum moss material to replace the declining peat production. The application of sphagnum moss wetland cultivation on transformed former peatlands is a new innovation developed in the project, enabling the renewal of previously peat-based economic activities in accordance with sustainable development principles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project pilots and develops effective practices for the establishment of sphagnum moss cultivation areas, water management, and growth optimization. Additionally, it investigates the identification and integration of sites best suited for various other land uses. Developing efficient and environmentally friendly cultivation methods for sphagnum moss production is particularly important for horticulture, where there is a high demand for peat-replacing growing substrates. The Growth from Moss project offers continuity and new development opportunities for industries based on the use of peatlands and peat materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
