Long-term changes in sense of coherence and mortality among middle-aged men: A population-based follow-up study.\u00a0<em>Advances in Life Course Research<\/em>,\u00a0<em>53<\/em>, 100494.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S104026082200034X\">https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S104026082200034X<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sense of Coherence (SOC)<\/strong> is a psychological concept that reflects how people view life as manageable, meaningful, and understandable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The study followed <strong>middle-aged Finnish men<\/strong> over several years to examine how changes in their SOC levels affected their risk of death (all-cause mortality).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SOC was not stable<\/strong> over time \u2014 it changed for many men during the follow-up period.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>decline in SOC<\/strong> was clearly linked to <strong>a higher risk of death<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>1 standard deviation (SD)<\/strong> drop in SOC increased death risk by <strong>about 35%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>2 SD drop<\/strong> raised the risk by <strong>about 70%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>2.5 SD drop<\/strong> doubled the risk (about <strong>100% increase<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These results held true even after adjusting for <strong>12 other health risk factors<\/strong> like blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol, and medical history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An <strong>increase in SOC<\/strong> had only a small connection to lower mortality, suggesting that <strong>loss of SOC is more harmful than gain is protective<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The findings suggest that <strong>supporting and strengthening SOC during middle age<\/strong> could help <strong>reduce death rates<\/strong> and improve <strong>quality of life in older age<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Findings from Kraav SL, Awoyemi O, Junttila N, Vornanen R, Kauhanen J, Toikko T, Lehto SM, Hantunen S, Tolmunen T.
