Contact the chosen supervisor, discuss with them and ask for a support letter. You need a support letter from at least one supervisor to be able to apply!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare your proposal and all the other required documents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fill in the electronic application and submit your application.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Read below about the application requirements, selection process and evaluation criteria in more detail:<\/p>\n\n\n\t<div id=\"accordion-block_cf247ad069af0b3535ae67ce3d456175\" class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-1199\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-1199\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\tApplication Requirements\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-1199\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-1199\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>The electronic application of the candidates must contain the following documents and information in English. NOVEL templates must be used where mentioned.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Electronic application form in the UEF recruitment system<\/li>\n<li>At least one signed <strong>Letter of Support<\/strong> from a NOVEL supervisor indicating the technical fit of the proposal with the hosting research group. The NOVEL template must be used.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A Research Proposal<\/strong> including a Summary. The NOVEL template must be used.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A Curriculum Vitae (CV)<\/strong>. The CV must indicate the length of your research experience. The NOVEL template must be used.<\/li>\n<li>A certified copy of your <strong>PhD Diploma<\/strong> in English (accompanied by a non-certified English translation if the initial document is not in English) OR a statement on headed paper from their supervisor\/academic institution confirming that the thesis has been submitted and will be defended before 28 February (in English)<\/li>\n<li><strong>An Ethical Declaration and Ethical Self-assessment<\/strong> including an infrastructure table. The NOVEL template must be used.<\/li>\n<li>A Preliminary <strong>Data Management Plan<\/strong> (one page). Follow NOVEL\u2019s instructions given in the NOVEL template, which must be used.<\/li>\n<li>Proof of English language proficiency may be asked if it is not indicated in the academic degrees, certificates\/diplomas or in the CV, i.e., if the applicant has not completed any academic degrees in university programmes taught in English.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Application requirements include that the candidates need to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>write a research proposal<\/strong> independently before submitting the application by the given deadline. Research proposal needs to contribute to at least one research area of the NOVEL programme, and interdisciplinary and intersectoral proposals are strongly encouraged.<\/li>\n<li><strong>contact at least one preferred supervisor<\/strong> prior to submitting the application to discuss the technical fit of the candidate\u2019s research idea with the competence and infrastructure of the hosting research group (incl. major equipment, lab resources, availability or possibility to access required data, and supervisory expertise).<\/li>\n<li>if an appropriate technical fit exists, <strong>ask for at least one support letter<\/strong> to be attached to the application.<\/li>\n<li><strong>use the templates<\/strong> provided (if documents are not in English and\/or if given templates and forms are not used, the application will not be processed further)<\/li>\n<li><strong>submit only one application<\/strong> per call (if one submits many, the application submitted first will be acknowledged)<\/li>\n<li><strong>commit to follow<\/strong> Horizon Europe ethical guidelines by filling in and attaching into their application the Ethics Declaration and Ethics Self-assessment forms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-4603\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-4603\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\tHow to Contact a Supervisor for Letter of Support\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-4603\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-4603\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>How to contact a supervisor and request for a Letter of Support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You need to obtain at least one signed Letter of Support from a NOVEL supervisor for your application.\u00a0You can find \u00a0all the available host research groups\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.uef.fi\/novel\/research\/\" rel=\"noopener\">here\u00a0<\/a>and supervisors listed alphabetically<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.uef.fi\/novel\/our-supervisors\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Read the NOVEL eligibility criteria to see if you are eligible to apply to this program.<\/li>\n<li>If you are eligible, contact ONLY one supervisor by email to describe your preliminary research idea. This supervisor will discuss it with you to see if technical fit exists. She\/he may also refer you to other supervisors, who might have a technical fit with your research idea.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not<\/strong>\u00a0send your research proposal and\/or your CV to any of the supervisors. ONLY send a short description your research idea, including:\n<ul>\n<li>the aims and objectives of your research<\/li>\n<li>the required data, materials, reagents, or infrastructure needed to implement the research.<\/li>\n<li>how your research idea aligns with brain health research and with the NOVEL research areas in the call you are applying to.<\/li>\n<li>how your research idea aligns with the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uef.fi\/en\/strategy-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0University of Eastern Finland\u2019s strategic profile area of Ageing, Lifestyles, and Health.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Discuss the technical fit of your research idea with one or several supervisors. If technical fit exists,\u00a0<strong>you may receive a Letter of Support from one or several supervisors<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Use the template provided. Include the letter into your application.<\/li>\n<li>Please note that supervisors\u00a0<strong>are not allowed\u00a0<\/strong>to be involved in drafting, reading or commenting anyone\u2019s research proposal!<\/li>\n<li>Please note that a Letter of Support\u00a0<strong>is not\u00a0<\/strong>a recommendation of being chosen to the programme. It is only for confirming the technical fit of your research with one or several research groups that is needed for your application to proceed to evaluation by external experts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\t<div id=\"accordion-block_0386b422ab7f9e7a0454046beb191202\" class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-9116\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-9116\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\tSelection Process\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-9116\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-9116\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4><strong>1 Eligibility check<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The first step of the selection workflow is the eligibility check pursued by the <strong>Programme Manager (PM)<\/strong>\u00a0to determine whether the candidates fulfil the predefined eligibility criteria. This is followed by the ethics check pursued by the <strong>Ethics Committee<\/strong> to evaluate relevant ethical aspects and infrastructure needs for the applicants\u2019 research proposals. If needed, consultation can be asked from the <strong>UEF Ethics Board<\/strong>. Applications not meeting the pre-set criteria, lacking required documents, or having severe ethical problems will not proceed to the next stage. All eligible applicants passing the ethics check will proceed to the next stage of the selection procedure.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2 External Peer review<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The second step is the external peer review conducted by international external science experts with no conflict of interest with the applicants or applications. Research proposals and CVs of the applicants will be evaluated independently by <strong>three science experts<\/strong>, who provide both numerical scoring and verbal feedback. The <strong>PM<\/strong> will calculate the total scores as an average of the individual reviewer\u2019s scores. All candidates reaching a pre-given threshold score will proceed to the next stage of the Selection Committee review. See evaluation criteria in section 5.2.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>3 Selection Committee Review<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The third step is the Selection Committee (SelectC) review. Each applicant\u2019s research proposal and CV will be evaluated by two of the four dedicated SelectCs, each representing one of the NOVEL research areas.<\/p>\n<p>The Selection Committees are composed of a chair, two international science experts, an industry expert, and an HR expert from UEF. All members except the HR expert are external to UEF. All evaluators provide numerical scoring and verbal feedback to the applicants. The industrial expert will evaluate only section 2 (Impact).<\/p>\n<p>Selection Committees also monitor that the applicants were evaluated fairly in the previous evaluation stage. In case of considerable difference (10 points or more of the maximum of 30 points available) between the scores given by the three peer reviewers in the previous stage, SelectCs discuss and may change the outlier scores within the limit of 5 points out of the maximum of 30 points that one applicant may reach.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>PM<\/strong> will calculate the total scores for each candidate as an average of the individual reviewer\u2019s scores. The candidates reaching a pre-given threshold score will proceed to the final ranking list (see next section).<\/p>\n<p>The fourth step is the final ranking lists and making the final decision by the programme\u2019s Steering Committee (SteerC).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>4 Final decision<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>The final decision is based on<\/strong> the weighted final scores of the applicant (External peer review 60 % and the Selection Committee review 40 % of the total scores) calculated by the <strong>Project Manager, <\/strong>as an average of the two stages of evaluation (the maximum weighted average score is 30 points).<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If two or more candidates receive the same score<\/strong>, the SteerC considers the gender balance of the programme\/research areas, in addition to scientific balance and the resources of the hosting research groups. In case of similar scores, the Finnish law allows the SteerC to offer the position first to a candidate representing the minority gender within the programme\/research area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Project Manager will inform the selected PFs of the final decision<\/strong> and provides instructions on the appointment process and signing of employment contracts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The remaining candidates will be placed on a waiting list until the selected applicants have confirmed acceptance of the position within 10 days.<\/strong> In case of vacancies, the next person on the waiting list will be offered an employment contract. When all positions have been filled, the <strong>Project Manager<\/strong> will inform the applicants on the waiting list about the completion of the selection process.<\/p>\n<p>For transparency purposes, the names and project titles of selected PFs are published on the NOVEL website, following confirmation that successful candidates have accepted the positions offered to them.<\/p>\n<p>If less than 9 positions are filled in the first call, the unfilled positions will be opened again in the second call. If any of the 14 positions remain unfilled in the two calls, a third call will be opened.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>5 Appeals &amp; Redress<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Applicants will receive feedback in the different stages of the evaluation process together with information on the appeal procedure via a dedicated electronic form. Applicants have <strong>five<\/strong> (<strong>5 days)<\/strong> to send complaints in each stage, which will be resolved during the following <strong>5 days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Feedback and appeals will be addressed by the Appeal Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Appeal may result in one of the following outcomes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>rejection of the request with justification and formal notification sent to the applicant or<\/li>\n<li>the request is declared admissible and justified, with corrective action being taken to allow the applicant to proceed in the evaluation process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\t<div id=\"accordion-block_32b7a9524e5c4647fd3534e7c9b3d81c\" class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-6695\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-6695\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\tEvaluation Criteria \t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-6695\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-6695\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Selection of postdoctoral researchers will be based on their merits, ensuring equal opportunity regardless of nationality, language, age, ethnicity, religion, disability, career breaks, social and economic status, gender and sexual orientation, politics, or any other personal feature.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Evaluation Criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Four specific criteria are used: a) the applicant, b) the research project, 3) its impact and d) its implementation, using a scale from 1 to 6.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Subject of and focus of assessment in each category<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>APPLICANT<br \/>\nQuality of applicant at international level (considering career stage and plans). Record of scient. publications, teaching, supervision, innovation, dissemination. International networks, collaboration, awards, grants, technical competency.<\/p>\n<p>RESEARCH PROJECT<br \/>\nQuality and credibility of proposed project, incl. RQ, theory and methods. Originality, ambition level of novelty. Adherence to Open Science principles. Strategic fit with UEF and NOVEL. Potential to reach\/re-enforce professional maturity\/independence during the fellowship. Quality and appropriateness of the proposed collaborations, within UEF, regionally and internationally.<\/p>\n<p>IMPACT of the research project<br \/>\nPotential of the plan to produce scientific breakthrough and advance applicant\u2019s personal career aspirations. Quality of the proposed exploitation, dissemination, and communication strategies to academic and non-academic audiences, including publications. Quality of the planned networking activities.<\/p>\n<p>IMPLEMENTATION of the research project<br \/>\nOverall clarity, coherence, level of detail and feasibility of the work plan, work packages and the workflow. Appropriateness of the allocation of tasks and resources, project management structure, and the risk management plan. Feasibility of completion within the 36-month fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>OVERALL SCORE<br \/>\nOverall quality, coherence and comprehensiveness of the plans and competence.
