{"id":80,"date":"2026-03-19T14:18:45","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T12:18:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.uef.fi\/peatresc\/?page_id=80"},"modified":"2026-04-20T13:10:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T10:10:09","slug":"frontpage","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.uef.fi\/peatresc\/","title":{"rendered":"Centre of Excellence in Peatlands, Climate Change and Ecological Restoration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Centre of Excellence in Peatlands, Climate Change and Ecological Restoration (PeatResC)&nbsp;<\/strong>is a joint effort by researchers from the University of Eastern Finland, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Aalto University and the University of Helsinki to assess<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>ongoing changes in northern peatlands.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We investigate how climate change affects peatland biodiversity and their climate response, and how upcoming large-scale restoration efforts in Finland and elsewhere in Europe will, in turn, influence peatlands and their functioning. We approach these questions using extensive and long-term datasets of ecosystem-atmosphere greenhouse gas exchange measurements and vegetation dynamics, as well as novel methods from the fields of paleoecology, remote sensing, experimental ecological research, modeling and disaggregative decision-support methods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to producing scientific outputs, we are committed to educating new experts to solve multidisciplinary challenges related to the future of peatlands. We promote collaboration across research fields and&nbsp;a holistic approach&nbsp;to peatland science by organizing biannual research community meetings, summer schools, and international conferences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our key questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is the fate of northern peatlands&#8217;
