The large pore volume and high surface area of PSi are beneficial to load the high content cargos. Both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs (i.e. poorly soluble drugs) can be easily loaded into PSi by choosing suitable solvents. Moreover, the external and internal surfaces of PSi can be selectively functionalized to achieve multiple application purposes. We&nbsp;are preparing porous silicon-based nanoparticles for cancer therapy and imaging.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.uef.fi\/ppg\/research-topics\/drug-delivery-and-imaging\/\" target=\"_blank\">Read more&nbsp;here<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Metal adsorption.&nbsp;<\/strong>  We are developing nanoporous hybrid materials that can selectively adsorb certain metals. These materials can&nbsp;extract valuable metals and pre-concentrate metals for analytical purposes.&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.uef.fi\/ppg\/research-topics\/metal-adsorption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Li-ion batteries.<\/strong>&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Si anodes.<\/em><strong> <\/strong> Silicon is a promising material for Li-ion battery anodes. The volume\u00a0expansion due to the lithiation of silicon can be buffered by using nanoporous structure inside of silicon itself. By using silicon instead of carbon-based anode materials, the energy density of Li-ion batteries can be increased by one-third. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cathodes and interfaces.<\/em><strong> <\/strong>Developing advanced cathode materials\u2014including layered oxides, high\u2011voltage spinels and polyanion\u2011based structures\u2014for higher energy densities, enhanced structural\/surface stability and improved safety. Strategies like surface coating, elemental doping, microstructural tailoring and single\u2011crystal engineering are employed to optimize both bulk properties and electrode\u2013electrolyte interfacial stability.
