The research data can then be opened, stored for a fixed term, prepared for long-term preservation, archived, or disposed of appropriately. Opening data means the act of making it available to others as freely as possible. Fixed-term storage refers to the storage of the data for a specific term, whereas long-term preservation refers to the storage of data without a time limit. Long-term preservation and archiving often refer to the same thing, including the notion that the material will no longer be modified once the preserving/archiving begins, but its preservation and usability are guaranteed by various measures.

With the advancement of open science, making the data openly available has been set as a common goal in academic community. However, it is highly important that you plan the opening of your data right at the beginning of the research project. it may otherwise turn out to be impossible to open the data afterwards.

Ethical or juridical matters may set some limitations to the level of openness of your data. For example, sensitive or confidential information or trade/professional secrets restrict opening the data. If your research data include any personal data, pay careful attention to data protection guidelines (see chapter 2).

In case you cannot fully open your data due to confidentiality, contracts, or other limiting issues, you can in most cases still publish the metadata (i.e. the description of the data). If the research data contains personal data, data protection legislation must naturally be complied with. According to the Data Protection Regulation, personal data can only be kept for as long as it is necessary for the purpose of the research. Afterwards, the data must either be destroyed, anonymised (i.e., personal data removed), or in some cases, it may be archived with personal data if there are sufficient grounds for that (read more in the guidelines of the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman).
