From my perspective, Real-Life Math Project has been nothing short of an eye-opener. Bringing together six higher education institutions across four countries; South Africa, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Finland, this international collaboration reimagines mathematics as more than just abstract formulas but as a practical tool that shapes Home Economics and the Consumer Sciences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For decades, mathematics has been taught using an abstract approach. It was just numbers on a board and symbols on a page. As a result, learners struggled to visualise mathematical concepts or understand how they apply to real-life situations. This project made one thing very clear to me: there is an eminent need to shift from abstraction to real-world application.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Drawing from my many years of teaching and parenting, I have observed how students develop biased and negative perceptions of mathematics, believing that it is \u201ctoo difficult\u201d before they have had the chance to see it in action.
