Led by Adj. professor Kainulainen, they are collecting continuosly updating data bank of healthy sleep. Methods are also developed that utilize artificial intelligence and deep learning for reliable and cost-effective automated analysis of polysomnography recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16.12.2021 NEWS<br>Advances in sleep disorder diagnostics (link in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uef.fi\/en\/article\/advances-in-sleep-disorder-diagnostics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">English<\/a>)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><div class=\"body field_type_text_with_summary field_view_mode_full text-long\"><p>Sleep disorders and insufficient sleep are major global problems contributing to, e.g., increased health care costs and sick leaves, and reduced quality of life. Therefore, simpler, more accurate, and more cost-effective methods for screening and diagnosing sleep disorders are urgently needed to improve the current sleep disorder diagnostics.<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">29.9.2021 NEWS<br>Sleep apnoea is an expensive national disease that is often detected too late (link in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mustread.fi\/artikkelit\/uniapnea-on-kallis-kansantauti-joka-havaitaan-usein-liian-myohaan-diagnostiikkaa-tulee-kehittaa-ja-tekoalylla-on-tassa-merkittava-rooli\/\">Finnish<\/a>)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People in need of sleep apnoea treatment is increasing, while the mechanisms behind the birth of it are still partly unknown, making treatment difficult. New upcoming AI methods can reduce the need for manual review of sleep registrations and allow long-term monitoring of sleep, which is not possible under laboratory conditions. <span data-moz-translations-id=\"0\" style=\"font-weight: 400\">Th<\/span>is<span data-moz-translations-id=\"0\" style=\"font-weight: 400\"> could play a significant role in the screening and diagnostics<\/span> of <span data-moz-translations-id=\"0\" style=\"font-weight: 400\">sleep apnoea<\/span>. More efforts are needed in the development of diagnostics, scientific research and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.7.2021 NEWS<br>SmartSleep Lab opens up new avenues for sleep research in Kuopio (link in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uef.fi\/en\/article\/smartsleep-lab-opens-up-new-avenues-for-sleep-research-in-kuopio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English<\/a>)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>SmartSleep Lab is a new research laboratory to be set up in the Department of Applied Physics at the University of Eastern Finland. The consortium funding is over 2 million euros and it is supported by Business Finland Innovation Fund, the Icelandic Centre for Research (RANN\u00cdS) and the Research Council of Norway in cooperation with NordForsk. The research project is carried out in collaboration with the University of Reykjavik (Iceland) and the Akershus University Hospital (Norway).
