All of us teachers do it, but do we give enough thought to what it is we are actually doing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As UEF Professor of Education Science P\u00e4ivi Atjonen has put it, when discussing what students will focus on in our courses: \u201cSit\u00e4 saat mit\u00e4 tilaat\u201d. That is, literally translated, \u201dYou get what you order\u201d, with the meaning of &#8221;You reap what you sow&#8221;. To put it simply, students will focus their effort on what will be assessed (and graded). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, to use Atjonen&#8217;s metaphor, what kind of orders are we placing to students in our courses? Have you recently reflected on your own assessment and grading practices? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why not listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juusonieminen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Juuso Nieminen\u2019s<\/a> interview titled T<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersgoinggradeless.com\/blog\/episode-45-nieminen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oward Assessment Utopias for the podcast <em>Teachers Going Gradeless<\/em> <\/a>as your end-of-semester personal and professional development. In the interview, Nieminen (an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education, University of Hong Kong, a Banting Fellow at Ontario Tech University, Canada, as well as an Honorary Research Fellow at Deakin University, Australia) discusses for example his own personal experiences as a teacher when trying to put into practice co-created assessment rubrics with his students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While listening to the podcast, why not also take a look at Nieminen\u2019s article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/13562517.2021.2021395?src=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Assessment for inclusion: rethinking inclusive assessment in higher education<\/a>, published in <em>Teaching in Higher Education<\/em> in 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PS: Finnish-language speakers: Have you noticed how many useful resources on assessment Professor Atjonen has online, for example <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@APA-atjonen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her channel on YouTube<\/a>?
