Living in Finland and the campus cities Joensuu and Kuopio
This year, Finland ranked as the happiest country in the world for 9th year in a row. Rather than happiness the index tells about life satisfaction. So, in Finland happiness is less about constant cheerfulness and more about trust, safety, high-quality education, and the freedom to shape your own life.
As a doctoral candidate in Finland, you can expect clean nature, reliable public services, a peaceful environment, and a strong culture of work–life balance. Nature is close by, everyday life is well organised, and independence is highly valued.
At the same time, settling in takes time. Winters can be long and dark, and building friendships may require patience. English is widely spoken, but learning some Finnish can make daily life easier and help you connect socially and professionally.
From a research perspective, Finland is an excellent place to study and develop solutions for a forest-based bioeconomy. In relative terms, Finland is the most forested country in Europe, with forests covering two thirds of the country.

While Joensuu and Kuopio may feel small compared to major international hubs, they offer an excellent environment for doctoral studies: a lively student atmosphere, close-knit academic communities, short distances, and easy access to beautiful Finnish nature. Both cities provide a safe, welcoming, and balanced setting in which to focus on research, build networks, and enjoy everyday life.
