Speakers

Mikko A.J. Finnilä, PhD
Academy Research Fellow
University of Oulu
Dr. Mikko Finnilä is an Academy Research Fellow in biomedical engineering at the Research Unit of Health Science and Technology at the University of Oulu. His research group is developing novel imaging biomarkers for musculoskeletal tissues. One of the main focuses has been X-ray microtomography-based methods, ranging from contrast agents to computational methods. Dr. Finnilä also serves as the leader of X-ray microtomography facilities.

Jari Hyttinen
Professor
Tampere University

Matti Iso-Mustajärvi
Ear, nose and throat diseases specialist
Kuopio University Hospital

Jukka Kuva, PhD
Senior Scientist
Geological Survey of Finland
Jukka is best known for saying yes to other people’s ideas and making them happen. That’s how FinTomo network was born and that’s what his talk this year is also about. He is an alumnus of the University of Jyväskylä XCT group and has now been running the XCT laboratory at GTK for eight years and sending out FinTomo newsletters for almost as long.

Tommi Kärkkäinen
Associate Professor
LUT University

Janne Mäkelä
Academy Research Fellow
University of Eastern Finland
Dr. Janne T. A. Mäkelä is a Docent and Academy Research Fellow at the University of Eastern Finland. He gained expertise in contrast-enhanced computed tomography during his postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Since 2018, he has specialized in investigating the potential of novel contrast media for imaging articular cartilage and optimizing spectral computed tomography to monitor osteoarthritis progression over time.

Mikko Nissi
Professor
University of Eastern Finland
Dr. Mikko Nissi is a Professor at the Department of Technical Physics at the University of Eastern Finland. He leads a research group specializing in preclinical quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI), with a focus on relaxometry, ultra-short echo time imaging, and quantitative susceptibility mapping. His research advances AI-assisted virtual histology, rapid qMRI acquisition techniques, and novel image reconstruction strategies, particularly in musculoskeletal imaging.

Heikki Suhonen
Laboratory Engineer
University of Helsinki

Joni Tanttu, M.Sc.
Doctoral Researcher
University of Jyväskylä
An experimental physicist and multidisciplinary collaborator from the XCT group at the University of Jyväskylä. Joni is on track to complete his PhD focused on fluid flow in bentonite clay and bedrock using X-ray imaging techniques. These materials are crucial components of the multi-barrier systems in spent nuclear fuel repositories. His talk will explore the digitalization of rock fracture networks and preferential fluid flow pathways in multiple scales, utilizing high-energy and dynamic X-ray tomography to support long-term safety modelling.

Mikael Turunen
Senior Specialist
Wellbeing Services County of North Savo
Dr. Mikael Turunen is a Senior Specialist at Kuopio University Hospital (Pohjois-Savon hyvinvointialue, PSHVA) and a University Researcher at the University of Eastern Finland. His expertise includes advanced imaging, including X-ray scattering and synchrotron imaging (Paul Scherrer Institute and MAX IV synchrotron laboratory), with a research focus on characterizing mechanisms associated with early osteoarthritis. He also manages research activities and funding at PSHVA, fostering collaboration between universities and the Wellbeing Services County, and bridging clinical and academic research for healthcare innovation.

Janne Yliharju
Doctoral Researcher
University of Jyväskylä
