April 15, 2026 Miina Norvik (University of Tartu): “Continuity and change of structural features: the example of Finnic”
Abstract
The aim of the talk is to examine phonological and morphosyntactic features from an areal typological perspective, considering both continuity and change. The analysis centers on southern Finnic varieties, while northern Finnic varieties are considered for background. The features are primarily drawn from the UraTyp dataset (Norvik 2022).
The main questions to be discussed are the following: What do the analyses of phonological and morphosyntactic features reveal about the (dis)similarities among southern Finnic languages and varieties? To what extent are the analyses of these two domains similar or different? How are continuity and change reflected in the results, including with respect to genealogical and areal relationships?
