Nordic Network of Labour Law Scholars
NNLLS2 – Helsinki 2022 (hybrid)

31 March- 1 April 2022
@ Futurum, Hanken – Helsinki
& on Zoom

Call for Abstracts

The second NNLLS conference, under the theme The new age of control and surveillance in labour law, will take place on 31st of March and 1st of April in a hybrid form: in presence at Hanken in Helsinki, Finland as well as online on Zoom. We would be more than delighted to see you in person but, due to current situation, online participation via Zoom will be possible indeed.

The conference is hosted by the Labour Law Group from School of Law, University of Eastern Finland.

The theme of the conference is inspired by multiplications of worker-status. As has been noted in research on precarious work, this change seems to require both rethinking and reframing the basic ideas in Nordic labour law. At the same time, control and surveillance takes new forms. Remote work, algorithms, privacy issues, power of the customers and consumers produce novel problems of control and surveillance. Furthermore, Covid 19 has exposed the fragile nature of the safety network of especially atypical workers and shed light to the diversification and discrimination at work.  While these questions have been on the agenda for quite some time, they remain important. We look forward to addressing some of these important questions. Keynotes are Mia Eklund, who will present perspectives on the possibility to nationally provide for more specific rules on employee privacy (Article 88 of the GDPR) in light of the Finnish national employee privacy legislation, and Susanna Lindroos-Hovinheimo, will discuss the EU whistleblowing directive and control.

In addition to this first part of the conference, the program of the second day will allow for presentations and discussions of research ideas or projects on any topic.

Contributions on the Covid-19 outbreak and its impact on labour law are also welcome.

We would like to encourage you to submit an abstract (or paper), presenting your ideas and research. It is an aim of NNLLS to make the conference arena a place for discussing and reflecting.

The deadline for submitting abstracts is on 15 March 2022.

You can send your abstract (450-500 words; your name, title and affiliation clearly stated) to the following email address: nordicnetworklabourlawscholars@gmail.com

Notification of acceptance will be sent by email no later than 18 March 2022.

We would like to encourage discussion on novel ideas and insights, therefore, no full paper is required. However, at a later stage, in case we would proceed with publishing of the conference material, we could ask the submission of full papers upon agreement.

The NNLLS annual conference is a pillar of the Network activities. Therefore, we ask all participants to become a NNLLS member. If you are not a member yet, you can become one (free of charge) by sending your expression of interest (specifying your name, title and affiliation) to the Network email address as above.
