Ahmed Mohamed: Glancing Back, Moving Forward: My Journey as an International Researcher in Finland
The decision to move to a new country for work can be a daunting one, but it is also an exciting opportunity to explore new cultures and gain valuable experience. This was the case for me, a young researcher from Egypt who moved to Finland to pursue PhD degree on the biological impacts of acute air pollution on humans.
I have always been interested in sciences and had completed my undergraduate degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in Egypt. I had also worked on a few biological research projects during my master’s degree in Sweden, which piqued my interest in pursuing a PhD in this field. Therefore, I applied to several universities in Europe and was eventually accepted into the PhD program at the University of Eastern Finland.
Moving to a new country can be challenging, especially when it involves a completely different culture and language. My first few weeks in Finland were a blur of new faces, new places, and new customs. Everything was so different– the weather, the long dark winter, the food, the language and the way people interacted with each other. But despite the initial culture shock, I found myself quickly settling into my new life in Finland. I was determined to make the most of my experience and was excited to start my research.
As a PhD researcher, I have to balance my academic work with my personal life. I spend most of my days in the lab conducting experiments and analysing data. However, I also made time for social activities and explored my new surroundings. Playing sports helped me to make new friends and stay active. It also helped during the moments of homesickness when my new friends in Finland became like a second family to me.
In terms of my research, I faced several challenges as well. Studying the biological impacts of acute air pollution on humans is a complex and interdisciplinary field that requires expertise in environmental science, biology and informatics. This led me to learn new research techniques and collaborate with other researchers from different fields. It was refreshing to be part of a collaborative and innovative work environment and I found myself enjoying my job more and more each day.
Another perk of being part of an international team is the opportunity to learn from colleagues with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. It has helped me to expand my research skills and to work on projects that have global significance.
Personally, I am happy for getting the chance to enjoy and explore the natural beauty of Finland. I went hiking in the forests which gave me a new appreciation for the environment and the importance of protecting it. I also visited several Finnish cities and learned about the country’s history and culture. Not to mention the chance to witness the northern lights phenomena, not only once but multiple times. Here is a picture of one of these magical moments with a sunset in Kuopio:
One of the most valuable lessons I have learned from my experience in Finland, until now, is the importance of adaptability. Moving to a new country requires a willingness to adapt to new situations and to be flexible in the face of challenges. This skill is not only valuable in the context of international moves, but it is also a valuable asset in any career or personal situation.
Overall, my experience up to now as a researcher in Finland was a transformative one. I gained valuable skills and knowledge in the field, made new friends and learned about a new culture. I also developed a deeper appreciation for the importance of environmental protection and public health. Looking back on my time in Finland so far, I feel grateful for the experiences I have had and the people I have met. Moving to a new country can be challenging, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. I have learned so much about myself and about the world around me and I have grown as a person in ways that I never would have expected. I look forward to what the future holds.
For anyone who is considering a move to a new country, my advice would be to embrace the experience with an open mind and a positive attitude. It can be difficult at times, but it is also an opportunity for growth and adventure. Make an effort to learn about the local culture and customs, and do not be afraid to try new things.
