PET/MRI

Preclinical PET-MRI

Added value from imaging – PET-MRI development platform for health and well-being technology

European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) project

Project codes: A75469 & A75483
Partners: Charles River, KCT, Orion Pharma, FinVector and IECO
Period: 01.10.2019 – 30.08.2022

Intro

MRI and PET have complementary strengths and by combining them into the same instrument one can obtain the excellent spatial resolution and soft tissue contrast (strengths of MRI) with high sensitivity required in metabolic and receptor imaging (strength of PET).

Aim of the project is to further strengthen the field of biomedical imaging which is one of the key expertise areas in the Kuopio region. Another aim is to improve communication and collaboration within the imaging ecosystem between public (universities, research institutions) and commercial (companies) sectors and to spread information about biomedical in vivo imaging.

This project will establish a new preclinical imaging modality, PET-MRI, that is currently not available anywhere in Finland.

The new imaging modality will be available for the large user community through the service concept developed in the Kuopio Biomedical Imaging Unit.

The renovation for the new PET-MRI imaging laboratory was performed May 2021-July 2022. The new variable field 7T (with 3T and 0.7T) MRI scanner with a PET insert for simultaneous PET imaging by MR Solutions has been installed and the new lab has been fully running since fall 2022.
