Research

Environmental Informatics applies methods and technology of information sciences for gathering, analyzing, interpreting, distributing and using environmental information. Environmental Informatics encompasses a broad range of disciplines that can be brought together to achieve a better understanding of environmental problems. These disciplines include: artificial intelligence, neural networks, evolutionary algorithms, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, information services, software engineering, internet and mobile technologies.

In order to be competitive we are building our expertise on technologies where we have some advantage due to our research projects, our partners, and the areas in which the University of Eastern Finland is strongest. We are focusing our research and education on using computational methods for analyzing and modelling environmental data as well as developing methods for continuous monitoring of the environment. Moreover, software engineering is utilized in our laboratory for delivering solutions to end-users.
