Study fees and costs of studies

There is no study fee for doctoral education at the University of Eastern Finland.

However, the IMPDET doctoral students are expected to cover possible research and travel costs during studies, including participation in the public examination of the dissertation at the end of the studies. Doctoral studies in IMPDET can be studied online, but at least one longer study period on campus is highly recommended.

Funding

There is usually no direct funding available for new doctoral students. Also, the right to pursue doctoral studies at the University of Eastern Finland does not automatically include funding or a contract of employment or teaching tasks at the University. Currently, most IMPDET students have a full or part-time job outside of UEF, which allows them to pursue doctoral studies part-time.

If you plan to study full-time, then you need funding to cover costs of living and possible research and travel costs. Funding options should be discussed with the supervisors before applying since the application should include a realistic plan of how the doctoral studies will be funded. Doctoral studies can be funded for example by a scholarship, by working as a researcher in a research project, or by studying part-time while at work.

UEF has salary-paying positions for doctoral students, which usually are applied on an annual basis. The salary-paying positions enable the doctoral students to engage in a full-time study with an objective to complete the doctoral degree in four years’ time. The doctoral students selected for the salary-paying positions will be hired as early-stage researchers by the University of Eastern Finland. However, the competition for the salary-paying positions is high, so this funding possibility should not be the priority plan for funding. There are also so-called finalizing scholarships available in some of the Faculties, which can be applied at the end of the studies.

The admitted students should discuss with their supervisors about funding possibilities and sources. The student should always be active and have the main responsibility when applying for funding.
