Research

Research in the field of logopedics examines the development and disorders of speech, language, interaction skills, human voice and swallowing functions. At the University of Eastern Finland, the focus areas of logopedic research are language-based learning difficulties and challenges in language development, longitudinal and cohort research, multidisciplinarity and internationality. The research also focuses on child vocal development and its associated disorders. In addition, research is being conducted on post-stroke speech and communication disorders.

The Communicate Research Network brings together researchers interested in communication

Established in 2021, The Communicate Research Network facilitates discoverability between researchers interested in communication so that they can meet more easily. The aim of the meetings is to get to know each other, to build the network, to describe the research as well as to plan various ways of collaboration. These meetings have also showcased the new laboratory and research facilities for logopedics at the University of Eastern Finland, which enable a wide range of research perspectives. Based on the meetings, four themes have been formed for the Communicate Network, listed below. These themes are worked on in small groups. If you are interested in hearing more or if you want to work on one of the themes, you are welcome to join.

Group themes:

  • intervention research
  • speech research
  • language research
  • technology and digitality

Data survey

For mapping the research data of communication, a survey has been made. The aim of the survey is to obtain information about the communication related materials and projects that the participants own, have access to or contribute to. Mapping data enables the utilisation of data, new opportunities, and cooperation. The extensive database built from the survey is used by the Communicate Network. A narrower database (name of the respondent, respondent’s organization, title of the data, and purpose of the data) will be open to everyone, including those outside the network.

The need for a survey arose in the discussions of the Communicate Network, but we also cordially invite others to participate and join our multidisciplinary network of collaboration and research! More data and researchers are needed for multidisciplinary cooperation, and the concept of communication can be interpreted very broadly.  The subjects of the study may include language, speech, sound, eating and swallowing, interaction, written language, hearing loss, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and multilingualism. If you have suitable material available, please answer the survey and tell us about your material. The questions in the survey are in Finnish, but you can also fill it in English. You can find the link to the survey below:
