Public and virtual examination of the doctoral thesis
Med Lic Elisa Neuvonen’s thesis entitled “The role of psychosocial factors in dementia prevention – From observational studies to a multidomain prevention trial” was publicly examined. The opponent was professor Esa Jämsen from Helsinki University and the custos associate professor Alina Solomon.

FinnGen study participants invited for clinical examinations in a sub-project on Alzheimer’s disease
“The first sub-project of the FinnGen study to invite participants for further clinical examinations will begin in eastern Finland. The project will explore methods that are suitable for investigating the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and other, less severe memory disorders. The aim is to improve early diagnostics of Alzheimer’s disease and to increase understanding of its pathogenesis.”
New algorithm for the diagnostics of dementia
“A top-level international research team including researchers from the University of Eastern Finland has developed a new algorithm for the diagnostics of dementia. The algorithm is based on blood and cerebrospinal fluid biomarker measurements. These biomarkers can be used to aid setting of an exact diagnosis already in the early phases of dementia.“

Professor Miia Kivipelto wins the 2020 Ryman Prize
The award recognises Professor Kivipelto’s more than 20 years of research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia.

Healthy ageing with an online coach
“Older people can improve their lifestyle and adopt healthier behaviours with the support of an online coach. This can help reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease and dementia. An international group of researchers, led by the Amsterdam University Medical Centre in the Netherlands and including the Clinical Research Center, Institute of Clinical Medicine, Neurology, at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF), has reported these findings today in The Lancet Digital Health.”
Common brain disorders accelerate brain ageing
“The University of Eastern Finland participated in the study by contributing data collected in the EU-funded AddNeuroMed study. Collected in Kuopio, the dataset included persons with Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairment, as well as healthy controls. This study is a good example of the possibilities provided by extensive international datasets and modern computational methods,” professor Hilkka Soininen from the University of Eastern Finland notes.”

WHO releases guidelines for dementia prevention with help from the Nordic Brain Network
“The WHO is releasing, for the first time, Guidelines on risk reduction of cognitive declines and dementia. The Nordic Brain Network led by professor Miia Kivipelto provided a major contribution to the development and definition of the guidelines.”
