Dear friends and colleagues,

The Finnish Society for Ethnomusicology and the Department of Cultural Studies at the University of Eastern Finland invites all researchers interested in music to participate in the Finnish national symposium of music researchers. The symposium will be held in Joensuu, Finland, on March 25–27, 2024.

The theme of the symposium is “echoes and reflections”. These can be understood as metaphorically related to the different functions and contexts of music, memory, communication between people and communities, the musical continuity of culture, or the cultural meanings of music in a broader sense. In concrete terms, echoes and reflections are related to acoustics of music and archaeoacoustics. The theme can also lead to reflection on the different ways in which musicology and music education have adopted and are adopting echoes from other disciplines, while building their own continuum. What prohibitions and requirements affect the continuity of musicology and its practices? How has the changing (neoliberal) environment shaped the norms of music life and the work of musicians and scholars? What kind of practices of intensifying “silenced registers” (Hofman 2021) and making themselves heard continue to be parts of music researchers’ work and attitudes? What kinds of contested histories and possible futures are produced and explored in the field of cultural music research?

“Echoes and Reflections” is defined in broad terms, and we welcome both empirical and theoretical contributions from researchers, teachers, performers, and practitioners working in any field. The conference will consist of keynote lectures, papers, posters, and panels arranged around specific themes. Contributions are welcome from all disciplines.

Since the Finnish Society for Ethnomusicology (SES) will be celebrating its 50th anniversary year in 2024, the programme will include a panel discussion on the past, present and future of the discipline.
