Akureyri, Iceland

The 4th Nordic Ruralities conference will be held at the University of Akureyri, May 22-24, 2016.

Akureyri is a town of approximately 18.000 inhabitants. It is the regional centre for Northern Iceland, offering a wide variety of services and activities.

A conference rate has been negotiated with three local hotels, but various other hotel and guesthouse accommodations are also available.

Extracurricular opportunities in Akureyri include 38 restaurants, cafés and bars, the northernmost 18-hole golf course and several outdoor spas with geothermal water.

There are also opportunities for hiking horseback riding, sea angling and whale watching in the fjord, and easy access to nearby Lake Mývatn, the majestic Dettifoss waterfall and other nature attractions.

How to get to Akureyri

There are direct flights to Keflavík International Airport from all the Nordic capitals and many other European and North American cities.

PLEASE NOTE: Flights to Akureyri depart from Reykjavík Domestic Airport. A taxi between the airports takes about 40 minutes. The Flybus to BSI bus station in Reykjavík takes about 50 minutes, a taxi from the bus station to Reykjavík Domestic Airport takes 5-10 minutes.

There will be a conference bus (with guide) from Keflavík International Airport to Akureyri. The bus departs from the airport at 11AM on May 22nd. The trip takes approximately five hours. There will also be a conference bus from Akureyri at 16:30 on May 24th. Seats can be reserved on the conference registration form.

Akureyri is approximately 400 km from Reykjavík and participants must travel by car, bus or domestic flight.

There are many car rentals at Reykjavík International Airport. It is an easy and scenic route but please allow for at least five hours driving.

Bus services

A bus service from the airport to Akureyri and back will be provided at a charge by the conference organizers. There is also a regular bus scheduled from the Reykjavík Mjodd bus terminal to Akureyri

Domestic flight

There are frequent domestic flights from Reykjavík Downtown Airport, serviced by Air Iceland.

Flights can be booked directly on the webite but not through international booking systems. Early booking is advised for cheaper prices.

The domestic flight is only approximately 45 minutes but please note that Downtown Reykjavík Airport and Reykjavík International airport are 50 km apart.
