Comparative Effectiveness of Treatments

Research relating to comparative effectiveness of treatments at the University of Eastern Finland has a long history. We assess the positive and negative effects and events of various treatments, procedures and pharmacotherapy in everyday settings and in unselected patient cohorts. We also study the targeting and timeliness of treatment in different patient groups.

Pharmacotherapy

We study the use of drugs and the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of pharmacotherapy.

MEDALZ (MEDication use and ALZheimer’s disease) is a nationwide cohort study, including all community-dwelling persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in Finland during 2005–2011. Comparison persons matched with age, gender and region of residence have been identified for each case.

Treatment and treatment processes

We study the effectiveness of treatment and procedures.

STN IMPRO is a multidisciplinary research project seeking to develop new analysis methods for evaluating health and social services, and to support the development of more equal and cost-effective services. Research team analyses social welfare and health care structures, accessibility of care, care paths as well as the outcomes, costs and cost-effectiveness of care, both before and after the health and social services reform.
NutOrMed (Optimal care for elderly – nutrition, oral health and medication) intervention study evaluates the impact of six month long nutritional and oral health intervention on nutritional status, oral health, functional performance and hospital admission/costs on older persons using home care services.

FIMA (The Finnish Interprofessional Medication Assessment) study examined the effects of interprofessional medication assessment (the FIMA model) on medication, functional capacity, quality of life and use of health and home care services in home care patients.

Nutrition

We study the effectiveness of nutrition therapy.

Nutrition as a promoter of health. Research groups at the Unit of Clinical Nutrition are closely integrated to serve the common goal to provide healthy and safe diet to all in order to maintain health and prevent diseases.

Patient and client safety

We study patient and client safety.

RECEPS addresses a topic that hasn’t been systematically researched in Finland before: comparative effectiveness and patient safety. We seek to produce information that enables a more effective and safer implementation of social welfare and health care services.
